RESOLUTION NO. 2002-
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING
COMMEMORATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ASPHALT COWBOYS
WHEREAS, to assist with the promotion of the Shasta County Sheriff's Posse (now the
Redding Rodeo Association)Rodeo,one of the West's most unique and colorful groups,the Asphalt •
Cowboys, was formed in the spring of 1953; and
WHEREAS,the main objective of the Asphalt Cowboys is stated,"To act and assist in any
way deemed lawful in helping the Redding Rodeo Association in the promotion of the Redding
Rodeo;"and
WHEREAS, membership in the Asphalt Cowboys since its inception in 1953 has been
restricted to 35 members who annually select their"Top Puncher"who serves as President,assisted
by the"Top Hand"who serves as Chairman of the Board and the"Corral"comprised of its Board
of Directors; and
WHEREAS, it is important to recognize that Cowboy Rex Wittner is the only remaining
active member still serving since the group's inception in 1953; and
WHEREAS,the Asphalt Cowboy's plan many fun and exciting events during Rodeo Week
designed to invite the community to spectate or participate in family-oriented fun; and
WHEREAS, the sight of the "cowboys" in their bright yellow shirts is one familiar to
thousands of children and other Shasta County residents who gather annually to watch the mile-long
Rodeo parade coordinated by the Cowboys which attracts entries from as far away as southern
Oregon, Eureka, Reno and San Francisco; and
WHEREAS,in addition to the Parade,the Asphalt Cowboys are responsible for setting the
tone and preparing the community for the premier event at week's end,the Annual Redding Rodeo,
with a week full of western-style events including some famous and infamous activities such as:
• The"Bank Robbery"and search for the identity of the"Lone Strangers"and the location of
the"Stolen Loot"
• Western Dance
• The Kiddie Pet Parade
• Street Dance
• The Quick Draw and"Whiskerino" Contests
• Pancake Breakfast; and
WHEREAS,on Rodeo Week Friday,downtown Market Street between Tehama and South
Streets is transformed overnight into "Roaring Gulch" where more than 10,000 cowboys and
cowgirls from all over Shasta County and beyond congregated to enjoy the outdoor feast lured by
the aroma of pancakes and syrup, sausage and coffee.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding
commends and applauds the Asphalt Cowboys for their community spirit and congratulates them as
they celebrate fifty years of family fun in promotion of the Redding Rodeo, and wishes them
continued success and encourages the residents of Redding to support the Asphalt Cowboys and the
Annual Redding Rodeo Week events.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced and read at a regular
meeting of the City Council of the City of Redding on the 16th day of April 2002, and was duly
adopted at said meeting by the following vote:
